Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Promoting Safe and Responsible Research
Hope Research Institute exclusively utilizes a central IBC to ensure the highest standards are met and maintained.
An Institutional Biosafety Committee is a multidisciplinary committee responsible for reviewing and overseeing research subject to the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules. The committee includes members with appropriate scientific, biosafety, institutional, and community perspectives. This combination of expertise supports a thorough evaluation of proposed research and its potential biosafety risks.
The IBC’s responsibilities may include:
-
Reviewing covered research protocols for compliance with the NIH Guidelines and applicable institutional requirements
-
Assessing the appropriate biosafety and containment measures for proposed researchEvaluating facilities, procedures, practices, and personnel training
-
Considering biosafety issues associated with research involving human participants, including product administration, handling, and potential shedding
-
Reviewing significant amendments or changes to previously approved research
-
Conducting continuing oversight of applicable research activities
-
Reviewing reported incidents, exposures, safety concerns, or potential noncompliance
-
Confirming that appropriate safeguards are in place before covered research begins
IBC review focuses on biological safety. It does not replace review by an Institutional Review Board, which evaluates the protection of the rights, safety, and welfare of human research participants.
Public Access and Transparency
Transparency is an important component of institutional biosafety oversight. In accordance with NIH guidance, Hope Research Institute makes approved IBC meeting minutes publicly available through this page.
Minutes are posted after they have been reviewed and approved by the committee. Information that is private, confidential, proprietary, security-sensitive, or otherwise appropriate for protection may be redacted consistent with applicable guidance.
